Microsoft Access

Cloud Street develop software applications in Microsoft Access when user-friendly, cost-effective database solutions are required.

For the very simplest databases, MS Access may be used as a stand-alone application. However, we almost always recommend combining an MS Access front-end (the part of the software that users see) with a MS SQL Server ‘back end’ (the part of the software that manages the data). This combination will cope with more complex databases, or systems with multiple users, and allows you to arrange web access to the data, or take advantage of a hosted (online) server to hold the data. The system will be more scalable as your business grows.

We work with clients to design and build tailor-made applications, specifically to meet the requirements of their business. We don’t have an off-the-shelf, standard package, but our extensive experience does mean that we come with good ideas for common needs or problems. We adapt and integrate these with build-from-scratch approaches for more specific requirements, to come out with a custom solution each time.

Typical uses for Microsoft Access databases include:

  • Relationship management for customers, funders, suppliers or participants
  • Planning of orders, jobs, tasks or meetings
  • Managing catalogues of products, services, specifications and prices
  • Generating customer quotes, statements of account or invoices
  • Tracking or auditing of timesheets, training, certification or equipment inspections

But you are certainly not limited to this list – Microsoft Access can provide a solution to support the very particular requirements of your business. See our case studies for more details and client testimonials.

We can build MS Access applications that interface with other business software or desktop programmes such as Excel, Word, or Outlook – e.g. an invoicing system that creates PDF invoices for printing, or planning system that will generate reminder emails for suppliers.

Options with Microsoft Access:

MS Access used in combination with MS SQL Server supports scalable business applications, with complex business rules or multiple users.

We have also worked with clients to upgrade from MS Access to SQL Server systems as business needs have expanded, or to update old databases to the latest version of MS Access 2010.

To support our software, you will need to have Microsoft Access installed on your PCs/servers. We will discuss the specific software requirements with you at the outset of the project. Free editions of Microsoft Access runtime are also available.
